Reawakened ~ Fiction Friday ~

It’s Fiction Friday again!

This week, we’re talking about a book called ‘Reawakened’ by Colleen Houck.

Q-9B9H-r

This book isn’t one I’d heard about, but I spotted it in a Big W store, and it captured my attention.

A story of Ancient Egyptian myth and legend, with a modern day twist, this book was exciting and entertaining. It included an interesting and intricate plot from start to finish, a lot of fun mythology, snippets of a history lesson, and hint of romance.

I found this book a very easy one to escape into and get lost inside. It was a wonderful read, and I definitely recommend you try it if you like mythology, fantasy, or young adult fiction, doubly so if you enjoyed stories like ‘The Alchemyst’ by Michael Scott.

If you have read ‘Reawakened’, plan to read it, or if perhaps this blog post has inspired you to give it a chance, do be sure to let me know of your thoughts in the comments!

Kitty Scream ~ Wicked Wednesday ~

Welcome to Wicked Wednesday!

I once had to save my cat from the neighbours house.

CnMzPifUIAApuO5.jpg-large

He was only a kitten, and had recently learnt to jump the fence. Unfortunately, this newly acquired skill had not come with ability to jump back.

He went missing, I looked for him, and couldn’t find him. There was nothing I could do. I was by myself. I just had to wait until he turned back up.

The phone rang. It was my mum. She’d gotten a phone call from someone who had read her number on his very tiny collar. They had him, and it was my job to go pick him up.

He was in a yard two houses down. I had wondered. At this point, I should tell you that he was SCREAMING. I mean really screaming. Two houses away and I could hear the wailing, enough to let me know he must be nearby, just not enough to direct me to him.

I went and knocked on the door, and had to walk through the whole house to collect my kitten, who was still wailing out the back, and clung onto me when I picked him up. The man at the door thought it was hilarious. I suppose it would be, if it weren’t happening to you.

Dobby: I know you’re not reading this, largely because you can’t read, being a cat, and also because I don’t like to share my laptop, but if you were I’d tell you one thing. You’re hilarious, but also humiliating, please try to limit the ‘h’ words I can use to describe you.

Persistence ~ Motivation Monday ~

Welcome to another Motivation Monday!

A river cuts through rock, not because of it’s power, but it’s persistence.

4436e05d025018d14980a4185f782bfb.jpg

You do not have to be perfect, or flawless, and you most certainly do not have to be strong all the time. You are allowed to break, to feel sad nd lonely, to feel like you can’t go on, or not want to try. But remember, the power that you have.

The first wave does not change the shape of the rock, and neither does the second. Again and again, the water hits it, and falls back only to see that it has had no effect. The water thinks that its attempts are fruitless, but it does not give up. It lashes at the rock, again and again, a thousand times over. And where before it seemed it could never make any difference, the rock is changing its shape, because the never giving up water and persistence have begun to cut through it.

Cut through your struggles, and if today the things that tie you to them do not break, try again tomorrow. Be persistent, and keep on trying, and eventually you will see all of the power you hold.

Twilight ~ Fiction Friday ~

Welcome to another Fiction Friday!

This week we’re talking about a story that you will almost certainly have heard of; that’s right, I reread ‘Twilight’ by Stephanie Meyer.

CmzIlE6VYAAD61o.jpg-large

‘Twilight’ has been hugely successful since it’s release, both as a book, and in the filmic adaptations. The story is one of love, and lust, of the supernatural, and of adventure. It really has a bit of everything.

Often times, ‘Twilight’ cops a bit of hate, mostly because it’s almost become popular to dislike it, but the majority of the hate is unwarranted. Though it might be girly, and cheesy at times, it truly is an enjoyable story, that almost anybody can get lost in, even if they don’t fit the demographic.

Odds are, you’ve read or seen ‘Twilight’ before, or you at least know the general gist of the storyline. Do be sure to let me know your thoughts on it, and whether you think the attitudes towards it are deserved or not!

Talking to Strangers ~ Wicked Wednesday ~

It’s another Wicked Wednesday!

When was the last time you answered a question that was never directed at you? I have done it many times, but today, I’m going to tell you about one specific occasion upon which this nightmarish event occurred.

niX6dy9iB

I was in a store called Red Dot, which is a kind of two dollar store. I don’t know how old I was, I can’t have been too young, but not too old either, and I must have been doing Christmas shopping.

So there I was, quietly minding my own business, looking down aisles for gift inspiration, when a woman appears. She was probably in her 30’s, give or take. I’d have said nothing. I didn’t know the lady, I’d never seen her before in my life. I wouldn’t have assumed she was talking to me, of course I wouldn’t have, but she was looking right at me, expectantly, like she was waiting for an answer.

She asked something about plates, or something else along those lines. I waited, she waited, neither of us said anything, and then, as she seemed so much to be waiting for me to answer, I did. I sort of stuttered out an I don’t know, I think. She laughed, and told me that she’d been talking to her son in the next aisle.

What have I learnt from this? Don’t talk to strangers, even when thats what they seem to want you to do. Head down, and pretend you have no clue what they’ve said. Also, whenever I talk to someone in public, I will make sure that person is within view of those nearby, lest some other little girl think that I am asking her opinion of plates she will never eat off of, because I do not know her.

The Bottom ~ Motivation Monday ~

It’s Motivation Monday again!

Remember that just because you hit bottom doesn’t mean you have to stay there.

f9955216c3376f5e1f5fdbba1a4c1949

It’s easy to want to give up, and often more than fair to want to give up, but don’t do it. The bottom is hard, and hitting it hurts, and it feels like there will never be any way of returning to anything better again. Don’t listen to those thoughts.

Let the solid foundation of rock bottom be what you use to push yourself back up, and climb to the top. Look at the bottom as a means to go higher. Don’t see it as an ending, because it isn’t one, let it be a chance at a new beginning.

Paper Towns ~ Fiction Friday ~

It’s Fiction Friday again!

This week we’re talking about a book you’ve probably heard of called ‘Paper Towns’ by John Green.

CmPD9GvUcAEzjuE.jpg-large

John Green is an incredibly popular author, especially among teens, and it’s not hard to understand why. He writes interesting characters with unique quirks, teenagers who go on a journey to discover themselves, and love stories with twists. His characters are relatable, fun and cool, even when they’re not supposed to be.

Since its initial publication, ‘Paper Towns’ has been film adapted, and enjoyed all around the world. Telling the story of a young, and slightly dorky high schooler named Quentin, and his girl next door love interest after she has gone missing, the story is a thrilling one, and leaves its reader wondering exactly which genre to categorise it as: Will it turn out to be a murder mystery?

Definitely worth reading, for young people and older readers alike, this book is entertaining, and will take you on a ride with it.

If you’ve read ‘Paper Towns’, plan to read it, or if this blogpost inspired you to give a shot, do be sure to let me know what your thoughts were!

Moon Phases ~ Wicked Wednesday ~

Hello! And Welcome to Wicked Wednesday!

As you may or may not know, as a result of illness I have missed a lot of schooling, and for what I have been able to attend, I have often been so drugged up on medication, that my memory is a little sketchy.

images.jpg

This has led me to many an experience, including the one I’m about to tell you about.

The phases of the moon. A basic science lesson that we’ve all probably been taught, only I wasn’t taught it, because I wasn’t at school for that lesson. Instead, I was a school just in time for the test that asked me for an answer I had never been told.

I tried to be resourceful, and use what knowledge I did have. The phases of the moon? There was only one source I could even draw a guess from. Twilight.

What are the phases of the moon? I wrote my answer: Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse, and Breaking Dawn. Imagine my shock when that was not correct.

Yes, it did occur to me at some point around Breaking Dawn that these did not sound like moon phases, and that perhaps Stephanie Meyer was not who I should be looking to for my science answers, but what choice did I have?

So I have two things to tell you; the first thing is that no matter how badly you think you’ve done on a quiz, or how stupid something you say might be, you can rest assured in the knowledge that I have done worse, and you need not feel so embarrassed. The second thing is to educate you, and just quickly let you know that while I’m still not entirely sure what the moon’s phases actually are, I am certain that the titles of the books in the Twilight series are not the places to find such information.

Northern Lights ~ Fiction Friday ~

Welcome to Fiction Friday!

This week we’re talking about ‘Northern Lights’ by Philip Pullman.

ClrrAlFVAAAPOYg.jpg-large.jpg

‘Northern Lights’ is probably at least vaguely familiar to you, because it was adapted to screen as ‘The Golden Compass’.

The story is a thrilling one, starring a young girl called Lyra, and her daemon (a kind of familiar that all humans naturally have in the story), Pantalaimon.

Full of exciting twists and turns, just the right amount of fantasy, mixed in with facts for you to learn, and enough danger to leave the reader begging for more, it’s no wonder why this book has had such success.

This book is definitely worth reading, and will transport you to the world within its pages. I would recommend it to all, especially if you enjoyed books such as ‘The Alchemyst’ and the series that followed by Michael Scott.

If you have read ‘Northern Lights’, plan to read it, or if this blogpost inspired you to give it a shot, do be sure to let me know what your thoughts are!
